Labna Origins
Labneh (also spelled lebni) is a Middle-Eastern “cheese” made by straining most of the liquid out of yogurt. What’s left is a super-rich, creamy and decadent-tasting spread with a slightly tangy flavor. Surprisngly, Labneh isn’t actually all that high in fat.
Labneh is similar to sour cream or Greek yogurt, but has a richer, more decadent texture. It is sometimes compared to cream cheese, although labneh is usually tangier and runnier than most brands of store bought cream cheese.
How to Serve Labna
- Bake moist labneh quick bread
- Make a vanilla labneh tart
- Labneh can be used as a dip or spread for pita bread or other types of bread. Top with olive oil, salt and herbs or spices for more flavor. For breakfast, spread toast or bagels with labneh and jam.
- Form the labneh into balls and marinate in a jar of olive oil and herbs
- It can be used as a dip (or as an ingredient in a creamy dip, instead of sour cream or yogurt) for chips or raw veggies
- Dollop labneh on top of spicy food for cool, creamy relief
- Mix labneh with honey, maple syrup or brown sugar for a sweet topping on dessert
- Eat labneh like yogurt, with fruit and granola
